The joint surfaces may be metal and metal, metal and plastic , metal and ceramic etc Atrhroplasty is commonly done in Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid arthritis Avascular necrosis of head of femur Arthroplasty is done for Hip joint, Knee joint, Shoulder joint, Elbow joint etc Total hip joint replacement has been popularized by Sir .John Charnley of England .This will relieve pain, limping and stiffness of the diseased hip joint. The head of femur is replaced with a metallic component and the socket (acetabulam) is replaced with a plastic cup. Recently articular surface replacement has come into practice where only the articular surfaces are replaced with metallic components. This technique has been invented and popularized in Birmingham, England. Dr.J.Alphonse Mariadoss went to this centre in 2006 November for training. Total knee replacement relieves pain and limp, corrects deformity and helps the patient to walk normally. A new technique “Minimally invasive solutions-Mini Incision Total knee replacement” has been introduced recently. She is unable to walk and stand for a long time. On examination she is having a painful limp, shortening of right lower limb, her hip movements are restricted and painful. Xray showed evidence of old perthes disease and secondary osteoarthritis of right hip. In view of her young age , an uncemented Total Hip Replacement was carried out.
